VT 3Square Recipients Can Apply for Replacement Benefits
The Vermont Department of Children and Families is processing requests from 3SquaresVT recipients to compensate for food lost during the recent storm. Recipients are eligible to have a portion or all of their October benefits replaced, depending on the value of the food they lost.
The deadline for requesting replacement benefits is November 8, 2017. Households who want replacement benefits should call 1-800-479-6151 to process their request, or they can go to their local Economic Services district office to file a request.
Power outages affect food security due to food spoilage. If your food has been above 40 degrees for four hours or more, your food could be unsafe to eat and pose a serious health risk to you and your family.
Old Canaan Freight Station On 7 to Save List
The old Canaan Boston & Maine Railroad freight shed has been listed on the NH Preservation Alliance, Seven to Save list. The freight shed was built in 1924 after the Great Canaan Fire destroyed the original depot. The new freight shed included a slate roof, and 6/6 windows – original design and materials that exist today. The freight shed stopped being used in the 1930s, and the depot closed in 1958. Since then, the building has seen little maintenance and its condition worsened over time. It is hoped that the Seven to Save designation will help highlight New Hampshire’s historic, but disappearing, railroad infrastructure and also position this remnant of Canaan’s history to be re-imagined to again boost the vitality of the village. For the first time in decades, maybe the freight shed will be on the right track.
