It is National Consumer Protection Week and VT’s Attorney General Donovan has released the Top Scams of 2016. Scams increased last year by approximately 25 percent.. The main scams reported in the last two years are as follows.
IRS Scams made the top of the list which received over 4,000 complaints. Coming in second was Computer Tech Support with over 400 complaints. Phishing scams via email took the number 3 place with over 300 complaints followed by debt collection scams garnering over 200 claims. Coming in last place was scams targeting businesses with over 100 complaints lodged.
The Attorney General advises Vermonters reminds residents that if someone they don’t know calls or emails them to stop, verify, and report it and don’t give out personal financial information. Anyone who has been targets of scamming should report it to the Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) at 1-800-649-2424.
