Arrest Made After Gun Shots Fired in Saxton River
Some Saxton River VT residents were evacuated on Sunday after gunshots were fired on River Street just after 3:00 am on Sunday. Multiple residences in the area were damaged from the gun fire. Vermont State Police say they discovered that Anthony Smith, 53 of 13 River Street may have been dealing with mental health issues. The Vermont State Police Crisis Negotiation Unit (CNA) and Tactical Services Unit were on scene and a member of the CNA unit was able to make contact Smith. Smith surrendered to Troopers without incident. He is currently lodged at Southern State Correctional Facility on $25,000 cash bail and is due to appear in Windham Criminal Court tomorrow (November 21.) Smith will face charges of Reckless endangerment, Felony unlawful mischief, and Use of a weapon while committing a crime.
No one was injured during the incident but Smith’s actions caused thousands of dollars of property damage and placed several residents and Troopers in fear for their safety. The investigation so far has not revealed that Smith was targeting any specific person when he began shooting, and there is no known on-going threat to public safety.
This investigation is on-going. Anyone with further information can contact the State Police at 802 722-4600.

Grantham Woman Starts Petition
Should a search warrant be required to required abused animals?
Andrea Conger, the Grantham NH woman who rescued 21 Chihuahuas from a home in Croydon several weeks ago, has started a petition to speed up the rescue of abused animals. The petition calls for a new law that would allow police officers or animal welfare representative to seize animals without a search warrant when there is visual or audible proof of an animal suffering inside a home or locked building on private property.
Immediate seizure currently requires an obtained warrant, issued by the District Court. Often and often there is no time. It also calls for police officers or animal welfare representatives not to be held liable for damage reasonably necessary to rescue an animal.
