Multiple Birds Perish in Newport Barn Fire
Multiple birds perished in a barn fire on Brown Road in Newport on Monday afternoon. Fire Officials say the barn was fully involved upon their arrival at 12:30 pm, and upgraded the fire to a 2-Alarm. No one was home at the time but multiple birds and pigs were in the barn. Firefighters were able to save all 7 pigs but one escaped. The remaining pigs were cooled down with water and given oxygen.
Crews were able to quickly knock down the bulk of the fire, but due to dry conditions the fire extended into the woods. Extensive overhaul was required for several hot spots in hard to reach places. The fire was deemed under control shortly after 3:30 pm when the property was turned over to the owners Valerie and William Sanborn. A joint investigation was conducted by Newport Fire-EMS and Newport Police department members. The cause of the fire was determined to be undetermined and if anyone with further information and/or questions is asked to contact Fire Chief Wayne Conroy at 863-1416.
