Newport Bus Drivers Get Meeting
Newport School Bus drivers will have a public meeting with the Newport School Board and Administrators to discuss their grievances. The drivers have been vocal in the public forums of the school board meetings since March 19. The majority of their grievances center over the dismissal of Diane Callum as transportation director and the hiring of Chad Howe. The bus drivers say they are training Howe how to drive the buses and Howe is making 33 percent more than then Callum was with many years experience. Bus driver Kurt Minich hinted that Chad Howe was hired because he is the husband of a school board member and son in law of a Newport Selectman. School board Chair Linda Wadensten said that is not the case and several other school board members have had spouses working for the district.
Other issues the bus drivers have brought up is pay, safety issues and doubling up on bus runs. No date yet has been set for the meeting.
